Be Careful What You Call Acceptance

Hi Brother

Be Careful What You Call Acceptance

There’s a word we use more as we get older.

Acceptance.

And sometimes it's exactly what's needed.

You accept that certain things have changed. You accept the scar, the injury, the grey hair, the fact that staying strong requires more thought than it once did.

That's life.

But there's another kind of acceptance I'm becoming increasingly suspicious of.

The kind that looks remarkably like surrender once you examine it closely.

“I suppose this is just what happens at my age.”

That's a dangerous sentence.

Not because it's always wrong.

Sometimes it isn't.

But because once you've said it, you stop looking for another answer.

And I've learned to be very careful about closing doors simply because somebody told me men my age aren't supposed to walk through them anymore.

I've had enough reasons to lower my expectations.

A shattered pelvis would have been a decent one.

A wrist full of metal wasn't bad either.

Age gives you a few more if you wait around long enough.

But here's what I've discovered.

The body is remarkably willing to meet you where your expectations settle.

Ask less of it for long enough and less becomes normal.

Move less.

Carry less.

Reach less.

Challenge yourself less.

Eventually, the smaller life begins to feel like the appropriate one.

That's the trap.

Because you don't feel yourself surrendering anything.

You feel like you're being sensible.

I think we need to know the difference.

There are things we should accept.

There are things we should adapt around.

And there are things we should look straight in the eye and say:

No. You don't get that one yet.

My age can change how I train.

It doesn't automatically get my strength.

An injury can change how I move.

It doesn't automatically get my independence.

Recovery can take longer.

That doesn't mean ambition has to become smaller with it.

And the calendar can keep adding numbers for as long as I'm lucky enough to be here.

It still doesn't get to decide what I expect from myself.

That's my decision.

And yours is still yours.

Maybe that's one of the real battles of getting older.

Knowing what to let go of...

and knowing what to defend.

Wisdom isn't accepting everything.

Sometimes wisdom is finally knowing what's worth fighting to keep.

So make your adjustments.

Change the strategy when you need to.

Respect the years you've put on the clock.

But be very careful what you surrender in the name of being sensible.

You might still need it.

P.S. This idea sits right at the heart of why I wrote Unbreakable After 50 — The Structural Rebuild.

Not to teach men how to pretend they're younger.

To help them understand what has genuinely changed, what can still be rebuilt, and what isn't theirs to surrender yet.

If these weekly letters have been speaking your language, the book goes much deeper.
